-------------------------------------------
One day, a sailor found a treasure map when he was on his simple cargo voyage. He told his captain and his mates of the treasure and they decided to set sail for it. Upon arrival on the treasure island, there were lush greenery, wild animals and cannibals. The map was hard to read as it was worn out. They searched and dug and found a chest. They celebrated and cheered and congratulated the sailor who found the map. But when they opened it, they found nothing but a piece of paper. In it, was another map which said that the real treasure was located in the new world. The new world is where the colonies had just settled and it was still unstable and a dangerous place to be. Uncharted and mysterious with the magic of natives, it was a place where no one really wants to be. The sailor did his best and convinced the captain of the value of the treasure and off they went to the new world.
The trip to the new world was harsh on the crew. When they arrived, they were nearly depleted of supplies. Determined to find the treasure, the sailor went of in search for it with a couple of mates. It was after several hours that they final found the X-mark and started digging. When it was the sailor's turn to dig, he struck gold. He yelled to his shipmates to throw down a rope so that they could lift the treasure up. He tied up the treasure and they hoisted it up. The sailor waited for his rope. He waited. But it did not come. He yelled for his mates but there was nobody around. He knew what had happened. He was left there. Desperate, he tried climbing out of the deep hole, but failed. By now, the captain and his crew had left the new world. They came for what they wanted and had no other reason to stay. The sailor was doomed. Tired and worn out from the digging and yelling, he could not help but sleep and rest.
By the time he woke up, he could see the moon shining into the hole. Seeing death straight in the face, the sailor could not help but say a prayer. He prayed hard for God to somehow get himself out of the situation he got himself into. Suddenly, a shadow appeared above him. He was terrified, scared that a beast had come and found its meal. He did not dare to move. The creature then threw something down the hole. It was a rope! As he climbed out of the hole and saw the creature that saved him, he was shocked. It was a native dressed in a bear skin. The sailor was so grateful to the bear-man and vowed his life to him. The bear-man did not say a word.
The bear-man led the sailor to his village. The sailor could feel ice cold stares towards him. The sailor then thought that this may be a village of cannibals. The sailor wanted to run, but the bear-man then spoke to him in rough English. "Do not be afraid". The sailor had heard of the natives being able to speak English due to the arrival of the colonies. But he had no idea that he was able to meet one. The bear-man lead the sailor to the chieftain's hut. There, he saw a man decorated in eagle feathers, puffing out smoke from something which resembles a pipe; he was the chief. The sailor saw the bear-man kneel down in front of the smoking eagle-man and did likewise. The chief was pleased and called the bear-man to him. The sailor did not dare to move and stayed kneeled, head down. The sailor heard whispers from the two of them. After a while, the chief told the sailor to stand up. Bear-man then told the sailor, "You will prove yourself worthy. Tomorrow, you will help us in the forest. You will learn our ways." The chief then called out, "Whiteman, you are a maggot! And until you can prove otherwise, you will be referred to as 'Culaak', a maggot!". The sailor did not dare say anything to oppose the chieftain and he left with bear-man. Bear-man invited the sailor into his hut. There, he rested.
When morning came, the sailor was forcibly awoken by the bear-man. He felt like he was still in a nightmare. "It is morning. Come, we go hunt deer." The sailor reluctantly went. As, the bear-man went, the sailor grabbed hold of him,
"Thank you, you saved me."
"Let go of me Culaak! Thank me when you prove yourself worth!"
The sailor followed the bear-man and suddenly asked him,
"What is your name?"
"I am, what you English people call, savages."
"NO! Hey! I have vowed my life to you! You are no savage!"
The bear-man was shocked and sighed.
"I am what you English people call, Bear."
"Bear?"
"Enough! Be quiet and follow!"
Bear was going to find Badger and Raccoon to follow in the hunt. They first met Badger, a man with a badger skin.
"So this is the Culaak you found. He looks weak!"
"Hahaha! You are right Badger! Come, we go hunt deer today."
The sailor followed quietly as they come towards Raccoon's hut. The sailor thought, okay, "We have Bear, a man in a bear skin and Badger, a man in a badger skin, now, we're going to Raccoon, surely, I'll see a man in a raccoon skin." The sailor laughed as he taught of this.
Bear called out Raccoon. As Raccoon came out, the sailor was shocked! It was a man, with a live raccoon on his shoulder!
The natives brought their weapons, Bear had a spear, Badger had bow and arrows, Raccoon had a catapult and the sailor had nothing. The sailor asked, "Where is my weapon?"
"You just watch today Culaak!" Bear scolded while Badger and Raccoon laughed.
After a long track in the forest, they spotted their prey. There were deers drinking from a pool of water left after the rain. Bear signaled to Badger and Raccoon to get into position while the sailor stayed close by Bear. As they drew closer and closer to the deer, “BANG!" a loud bang from a gun was heard, and the deers started to run. In the confusion, they ran after the deers.
The sailor was lost, he was separated from the rest of the group in the confusion. "Now I'll never prove myself worthy!" mumbled the sailor. Just as he was searching around, he stumbled across a fox. They stared in the eye for a while, and the sailor thought, "If I can't get a deer, might as well get a fox!” He chased after the fox but no matter what, it was too fast for him. The sailor felt like he was being mocked by the fox. The fox stayed close by, as if asking the sailor to follow it. After chasing for half an hour, he could hear someone moaning. He went to find the source of the sound. As he drew closer, he saw Badger, trapped in a bear trap set by the colonies nearby. One of his leg was caught and the pain was unbearable. Rushing to aid Badger, he called out,
"Are you alright Badger? Where are the others?"
Badger moaned more.
"Don't worry! I'll get it out for you!"
"Don't you touch me Culaak!"
"Hey! I'm trying to help you!"
Badger reluctantly let the sailor help him. The sailor tried to free the trap by using a stick he found nearby, but it broke.
"Hand me your knife!"
Badger stared at the sailor, he saw his sincerity and handed him his knife. The sailor took the crooked looking knife made from animal bones and tried to free the trap by digging it out. After clearing the trap, the sailor forcibly opened the trap. He helped Badger tie up his wounded leg. By now, Badger had passed out due to the pain, and there was no way of knowing the correct way back to the village. The sailor thought that by helping Badger, he could get back to the village. Now, they are both lost.
Then the bushes near by started to rustle, something was coming closer. The sailor, in defense, grabbed Badger's knife. Fear, struck the sailor, he was thinking of abandoning the unconscious Badger but thought about being worthy. This is what it meant. I need to prove that I was worthy, thought the sailor.
Then, out of the blue, a raccoon appeared out of the bushes. It was the same raccoon on Raccoon's shoulder when they first met at the village. The sailor was relieved and lay in amazed at the creature.
The raccoon then lead them back to the village. There, Bear asked, “What happened! How did Badger get hurt!” The sailor could feel the anger in Bear, it was difficult to explain. Badger then awoken and said, “The Culaak saved me” and passed out again. The sailor was saved from the obviously death situation. “Come to my hut” called the Bear. The sailor explained how a fox led him to Badger and how Raccoon’s raccoon led them back to the village. “It seems that the spirit of the fox was with you.”
“The spirit of the fox?”
“You will understand… someday, Culaak.”
The sailor thought that he had managed to become worthy but he was wrong. But what he did gained the trust of Bear.
The sailor learned many skills, foraging, hunting and the culture of the natives. He gained the trust of Bear, Badger and Raccoon and they were best of friends. One day, the chieftain called the sailor to his hut. Bear, Badger and Raccoon was there. The sailor kneeled down in respect. “You have proven yourself worthy Whiteman. From today onwards, you will be known as Fox, for I see that the spirit of the fox is within you. Now stand.” The sailor was honored to be accepted as a part of the village. He vowed his life to it and to everyone in it. Bear, Badger and Raccoon congratulated Fox, and they were the best of friends.
